The Tragedy of Man

The Tragedy of Man

Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre from Timișoara (RO)

This is an exceptional theatric laboratory, where the need for precision is not originated in the superiority of the judgement-makers, but only in love, compassion and the joy of closeness and togetherness. Purcărete's unique humour, his legendary kindness and modesty bring the "Tragedy of Man" to unexpected ties: Madách's great poem of the 19th century, difficult at a first glance, becomes alive and accessible, while his abstract philosophy-theology is truly vital. Purcărete reaches out to the great classic, he starts a profound dialogue and invites him as a guest in our age, full of contradictions, fear, anxiety, a time which is burdened more precisely by the fact that despair is no longer hidden. We rarely have the opportunity to see such an intimate "Tragedy"; this is, without doubt, an exceptional moment of cultural history. Madách Imre rejoices that his work has not lost its value: time has only made it more important and indispensable. (András Visky, dramaturge)

Silviu Purcărete (b. 1950) is one of the most important and highly regarded Romanian theatre and opera directors – both in Romania and internationally.
