The Cherry Orchard
A. P. Chekhov
Our depleting memories are gathering slowly in the marsh and precarious land of our existence. Do the illusory nostalgia or real feelings awaken true affection in us? Everyone of us has a Cherry Orchard, which we are daily trying to clear. The Cherry Orchard is a metaphor. It represents the unbreakable clinging to us with demon powers. And everything unbreakable is ageless. The Cherry Orchard, as well as its owner, Ranevskaia, are hidden behind a timeless mask. Both are eternal, because they cannot be destroyed. Their power resides in their spirit. It defies time, it creates a communicating bridge between past and future, and suggests that life is probable only for one, long and dilated, moment.
