TESZT – The celebration of Theatre

This year’s programme of the Euroregional Theatre Festival Timișoara is now official and out. The 9th edition of this international theatre showcase takes place, as usual, in the last week of May, between the 22nd and 29th. In the last few years, TESZT has become one of those necessary traditions that forms, researches and interconnects the theatrical movements and aesthetics of the region, and its positive effects have been clearly visible in the past years. Unlike other theatre festivals from Romania, TESZT is not just about great and new performances and colourful offs. It is special because of its unique atmosphere, and its ability to transform the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre from Timișoara into a fertile platform for dialogues between artists from different cultures, different languages, and the public of the festival. It has become an open environment for all the artists and theatre lovers in the region.

This year’s edition of TESZT hosts 10 internationally appreciated ensembles and their performances. Similarly to the previous editions, at the heart of the festival, thus in the centre of all the performances and off programmes, there are current cultural, social, psychological, political issues, such as identity, responsibility, personal and common traumas and the attempts to overpass them. Year by year this showcase has destroyed borders in fields of aesthetics. The current programme features a handful of performances that were not created in the DKMT region, at least not in a geographical way. These projects, nevertheless, are either referencing the region, or their creators come from this area. What is more, in some occasions the audience itself is asked to join the performance.

Faithful to our traditions, we are opening this year’s festival with a long-awaited co-production. By means of such co-productions, as with last year’s Manipulations, our aim is to connect and to urge theatres in the region to cooperate. This year, the performance is directed by Urbán András, while the cast is made of actors both from the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theater and the Kosztolányi Dezső Theatre Theater from Subotica. The programme includes performances signed by well-known directors such as Urbán András, Kokan Mladenović, Horváth Csaba or Boris Liješević, but also by world recognised and awarded directors such as Schiling Árpád, Radu Afrim, Ivo Dimchev, who have not yet attended TESZT festival.

The main selection is completed by an off programme that will consist of workshops, book presentations and additional theatre performances. As usual, the performances will be followed by discussions with the artists and the viewers, moderated by László Upor, theatre theoretician and dramaturge.

The programme includes on one hand performances of the so-called classical theatrical forms, but also some very provocative pieces, so hopefully everyone can find what they are looking for. All the performances and discussions will be translated into English, so that language is not a barrier to prevent understanding.

See you in May. Because TESZT is not just about theatre, it is about being, thinking and celebrating together.
