RELOADED CLASSICS, CONTEMPORARY EXPERIMENTS
Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre of Timișoara is happy to announce the 8th Euroregional Theatre Festival from Timișoara, also known as the TESZT that will take place from the 23rd until the 30th of May 2015. In the name of innovation and tradition this year’s festival will feature some of the more well-known names of the industry but also artists that might not be as familiar to the theatre loving people of the city, but are nonetheless greatly appreciated in other parts of the DKMT region. Thanks to the ever-changing character of the festival and its colorful programme, the audience will have the chance to encounter some of the region’s most exciting, controversial and highly appreciated directors, companies and theatre experts.
Since its first edition, TESZT has become one of the most important cultural events of Timișoara and its surroundings. The main goals of the festival are to support multiculturalism and to intensify the cultural and professional relationships between the artists and the audience. To achieve this the event will aim to present the newest shows and most innovative tendencies of the contemporary theatre scene. Because of this, the festival is an important meeting point for artists of different cultures, but also for the public, who during this one week long survey has the opportunity to see some of the finest shows of directors such as: Urbán András, Hajdu Szabolcs, Tomi Janežič, Kokan Mladenovič, Silviu Purcărete or Radu-Alexandru Nica. This edition will also, for the first time, showcase companies and artists from Croatia, Slovania and Montenegro.
It is almost a tradition for the performances of the TESZT festivals to deal with political, sociological, cultural and artistic problems, as well as the soft spots of the DKMT region. These performances are also statements about the ins and outs of theatre making, many times by the means of collaborations or coproductions. This year both the opening and the closing performances of the festival will be coproduced. The first one, Manipulations is a performance by director Bojan Jablanovec, head of the Slovenian theatre company, Via Negativa; it is a production that connects four countries, several nations, different theatres and festivals and various freelancing artists. The closing show of the festival will be a coproduction by the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre and the German State Theatre from Timișoara, under the artistic coordination of the world famous director Silviu Purcărete.
Other exciting performances this year will be: Alexandra Zec, directed by Oliver Frjlić and awarded Best Performance of the Year at the 2014th edition of the BITEF, Bánk Bán by Katona József, which is Urbán András’s retake on a classical historical drama and a show that has become one of the most controversial performances of the region. Tomi Janežič, who’s Seagull was a big favourite at the 2013th edition of the festival, will also return with another out of the box performance: The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Lev Tolstoy. Reloaded classics and contemporary experiments represent the main direction in this year’s programme.
The TESZT OFF is also worth to attend. The Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre of Timișoara is committed to open towards other genres, such as visual arts, literature or music. This year the organisers will bring you the following: slam poetry, a quite new genre that combines both literature and performing arts, Theatre Jam, an improvisation based game with the audience and two workshops that will be open for anyone to visit.
At last but not least, the festival aims to support young artists and theatre experts in their professional development. To achieve this, the organisers will be inviting students from all around the region to attend an international workshop, coordinated by directors Bojan Jablanovec and Tomi Janežič, set designer Iuliana Vîlsan and theatre critic Varga Anikó.
Hope to see you in a few weeks!
