HalfTESZT – budget cuts will reduce the program of the festival starting in ten days

The Euroregional Theatre Festival Timisoara – TESZT, has reached its 12th edition and has to considerably restrain its initial programme after the Local City Council voted on the budget of Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre Timisoara. In order to maintain the continuity of the festival and preserve our relationship with spectators who believe in the TESZT spirit, we will organize a pocket-version of TESZT between the 20-26th of May, a crash tes(z)t, with damaged lights on.

The authorising officer, Timisoara City Hall, adopted the city budget on Tuesday, the 7th of May, reducing the budget of Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre Timisoara below the 2018 budget, thus making the initial program of the festival impossible to carry out. In the newly-created financial situation, the Theatre had to cancel many of the selected and invited performances, as well as to reduce substantially all costs of such a wide-ranging international event.

This year’s edition will be placed under the slogan ‘50%SZT– half the budget, half-a-TESZT’, being a crash tes(z)t, meant to maintain the continuity of the festival. The first edition of the Festival Market – Introducing Festivals, scheduled during the festival so that theatre specialists can have a place of interaction and communication, will be cancelled as well. For the same budget reasons, the Association Timisoara European Capital of Culture 2021 has cancelled the Fo(u)r Public Spaces programme created specifically for TESZT, which was meant to present four open-air performances with free access.

TESZT is the most important international festival in the region and the only one in Timisoara to take place in the first part of the year; its focus is contemporary theatre and new means of expression. Tickets will be available on Monday, 13th of May and they will cost 40 RON, or 30 RON (discounted price), and all the performances will be translated into Hungarian, Romanian and English. The information about invited performances, both the confirmed ones, as well as the ones cancelled for financial reasons, can be found on www.teszt.ro – as a clear depiction of what an international festival in a future European Capital of Culture could be.

The official opening of the festival will take place on Monday, the 20th of May, in the Foyer of the Theatre, before the start of the Russian multi-awarded performance “Sociopath/Hamlet” – from Novosibirsk. The Slovenian actors Uroš Kaurin and Vito Weis will perform twice “Hero 2.0 - The Show of all Shows” and they will conduct a workshop for students and young actors in the region during the 22nd-26th of May. The exhibition Coll[age] by Benedek Levente, the graphic designer of TESZT, will be opened at Atelier de Urbanism on Monday, the 20th of May, at 6 p.m. Although a more restricted selection means a step backwards for TESZT, a festival which has been growing year after year with a wider geographical area and more complex performances, The Hungarian Theatre highlights the importance of the continuity of the event – with the hope that the editions of 2020 and 2021 will benefit from a more fortunate context.
